Around the same time, I was watching a few people trying to discuss the possibility of cheating, if it’s going on right now, if it’s possible etc.
Those trying to discuss the topic were getting a lot of stick for talking about it and were being told its not possible and just generally being flamed. Well that pushed my buttons, so I got working on seeing just how impossible it really is.
I tested out a few different ideas, editing files, messing with file hashes, watching packets through WireShark etc. Eventually I managed to find two separate ways to cheat at AoE Online. Both cheats are active during regular quests and Player Vs. Player matches (PVP).
The cheat I’ll discuss here is the simplest and only requires the editing of a single file using Notepad. There are a number of things you can change/cheat using this method – but for example purposes, I just modified Market values so that I could buy 100 pieces of wood for just 2 pieces of gold.

How to perform the cheat
Open C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Project S\startup\production.cfg in notepad and add the following to the bottom of the file:
marketTradeFactor -2
marketCostDeltaBuy 2
marketCostDeltaSell 2
marketCostMin -2
marketCostMax -2
tributePenalty=0.5

As a final side note, I had actually contacted MGS before, and asked for access to the game – in return I’d let them know about any exploits/hacks/cheats I found and sign an NDA which would prevent me posting about them. They weren’t interested :p Well here’s the first cheat. I’ll save the other until the game is out of Beta. Play for free or buy a premium pack on August 16
